Year 4's Adventure in York and Ripon

On Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of February, the children from Year 4 at Stanah Primary School went on their annual trip to York and Richmond. The purpose of the trip is to support the children's learning in History and Geography. In History, the children have been studying the Roman invasion and occupation of Britain and learning what life was like in Britain at that time. While in Geography, the children have been carrying out a range of field studies around the Thornton area and they were going to compare this data with another locality.

On the morning of the trip, the children, their parents and teachers arrived in school with a sense of excitement - the day we had all been preparing for had eventually arrived! Once the coach was packed, the parents waved their children off and we set off on our journey to Richmond.

On arrival at Richmond, we unpacked our clip boards and set off to investigate the local area. We carried out traffic surveys; studied traffic calming methods employed in Richmond and interviewed local people and tourists about their views on the locality. We also explored Richmond Castle and learned some of its history and the legend of Richmond's Little Drummer Boy, whose ghost is still believed to haunt the grounds of the castle today!

Our next port of call was York Racecourse Centre, our accommodation for the night. The children were delighted with their bunk beds and en-suite rooms and devoured their hearty dinner with relish.

After dinner we dressed up warmly and headed for York, where we were going on an ever so creepy GHOST WALK! The children gained fascinating insights into the dark history of York and were entertained by the gory tales recounted by the story teller. Although, some of them did send chills down our spines!!

On Friday, we set off early to Murton Park, where we were greeted by a stern Roman Legionary and enrolled in the Roman Army! We spent a brilliant day in the Roman Fort, learning about the history of the Romans in Britain and the life of a typical Roman soldier. We all enjoyed the drill practice and guard duties, but improving our combat skills by attacking sacks of straw with our swords, then throwing spears at effigies of Celts was the real highlight! We also learned to make Roman oil lamps from clay and signed our contract to the Roman Legionary by writing in Latin and using Roman numerals, which was quite challenging! All the children and teachers agreed it was a fantastic way of bringing history to life.

At the end of the day, the children piled back onto the coach, exhausted and ready for home but having thoroughly enjoyed their adventure.
